Sales and Use Tax Auditor
Robert Half Management Resources is working with a government entity on a sales and use tax auditor position in the Denver West area. Responsibilities - Schedules and conducts audits of local and certain identified out of area taxpayers. Audits books, accounts, and records of private business firms to determine sales/use licenses and taxes and prepares summary reports of findings. Prepares correspondence regarding audit scheduling, documentation, payment agreements, and follow up. - Interprets applicable codes and ordinances; determine violations and noncompliance; recommends effective corrective ensures; participates in collecting delinquent accounts. - Communications audit results to taxpayer or taxpayer representatives both orally and in writing. Recommends changes to operating systems to ensure future compliance. Communicate audit procedures and results to hearing officer at informal meetings, hearings and in court. Prepares documentation for issuance of summons for violations and testifies in court if necessary. - Educates taxpayers concerning sales and use tax, audit and collection procedures, and tax preparation. Conducts taxpayer assistance seminars and education efforts as needed. - Survey business locations to ensure businesses are licensed. Communicates information pertaining to business activity to sales tax technician and accounting team members. - Processes and assists taxpayers with requests for refunds. - Perform varied office work related to the administration of tax and license laws and ordinances; license taxable businesses; assist in reviewing and proposing changes to the tax code. Prepares sales tax, audit and enforcement reports as needed. Evaluates audit practices and recommends changes as necessary to improve efficiency. Compiles and inputs data into financial management system. Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary. - Perform internal audits of cash collection and inventory policies, procedures, and compliance including reconciliation of sub-systems to the general ledger. - Represents the City in the Sales Tax Coalition of the Colorado Government Finance Officers Association. - Prepare and present formal operational reports, maintain files, records and accounts related to auditing work. - Performs other duties as assigned. $35.63 to $41.25 per hour
Experience - Two years direct accounting, auditing, or fiscal operations experience; government accounting/audit experience preferred. Certified Public Accountant in Colorado desirable.
