This unit is responsible for CMS contracted work related to audit, appeals and special projects for a subset of institutional providers located across the country. The audit sector conducts Medicare audits on provider cost reports to determine payment and calculates the final settlement determination on the audited cost reports. The audit area also handles cost report appeals from various other Medicare contractors, as assigned by CMS. Special projects consist primarily of identifying potential exposures to the Title XVIII Medicare trust fund through the preparation of data analysis models utilizing national cost report data.Primary ResponsibilitiesPerforming or assisting in the performance of audits of Medicare cost reports in an accurate and timely manner. Ensuring that audits are performed in compliance with Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS), Medicare law and reimbursement principles, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), in those cases where Medicare principles do not address an issue.
